What I like to do now is copy the original layer and Gaussian Blur (filter -> blur -> gaussian blur) layer 1 copy at 1.5. After it's blurred alter the Opacity of that layer so that you get a nice misty effect. I usually put it on 40%. Below is a copy of the image without the Gaussian Blur, and one with it.
Now, you could stop there, flatten (layer -> flatten image) your image, and be done with it. However, I choose to try and improve it some more.
